Hipstamatic

Hipstamatic is a lovely photo app for the iPhone. It’s the one I use the most on my iPhone. And let me start by telling you Hipstamatic s a must have app for your iPhone.

Hipstamatic is the number one digital photography selling application for the Apple iPhone. It uses the iPhone’s camera to allow the user to shoot square photographs, to which it applies a number of software filters in order to make the images look as though they were taken with an antique analog camera.

Retro photography

Hipstamatic is part of a “retro” trend in photography, which has seen a rise in the popularity of cheap and technically obsolete analog cameras (such as Lomography and Polaroid instant cameras), as well as software filters and smartphone software that emulate such cameras. Other “vintage” photography applications include Instagram, Polaroid and CrossProcess. Like Hipstamatic, they often include social networking features to facilitate the exchange of photos via the internet.

I’m currently using the 185 version. It has a very nice interface and is easy to handle. Hipstamatic comes with a range of free films, lenses and flash filters and gives you the option to buy extra packs. With many lenses and filters to choose from it can be hard to determine which setup to choose. You can use the randomizer to let the app determine a random setup for you just by shaking your iPhone. After getting to know al differences better you’ll be able to set your own.

Hipstamatic photo sharing

As you might expect from a cool app, Hipstamatic photos can be shared instantly by adding the photo to your Facebook, Flickr or Tumblr account. The fun starts when entering and competing with various Hipstamatic contests. In review mode, the app gives you the option to select the exact same setup from that one cool photo you’re looking at. This is a quite handy feature.
